Greenhouse gases such as CO2, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and others have significantly increased in the last decade. Due to man’s inadequate efforts to preserve Mother Nature, we are experiencing record-breaking temperatures, sea levels rising, unusual weather, and so many other phenomena – the glaciers are melting; temperatures continue to rise; natural calamities have become more often when it used to be sporadic; inland flash floods, hurricanes, cyclones and storms have invaded more and more areas and increased in frequency; significant changes in water availability for human consumption, more frequent forest fires and even droughts in some places; reduction of agricultural production and more.
Tailpipe emissions have been a known major contributor of greenhouse gasses, which in turn worsens the current environmental condition. Transportation emission comprises 18 to 23 percent of greenhouse gasses in the United States alone, and allegedly half of the greenhouse gases from automobiles globally comes from the US.
The primary reason why fossil fuels exacerbate global warming is because of the fact that they release a multitude of carbon molecules that has been stored beneath the Earth for millions of years, away from living organisms; and utilizing or burning these fuels will mean more carbon expelled into our environment – the same environment where we get our food, same ecosystem where we live and thrive. A big portion of the carbon dioxide buried in the ground comes from coal and natural gas which man refuses to fully regulate and control its consumption and extraction; and we do not have an infinite supply of fossil fuels.
This is where the controversial hydraulic fracturing or fracking comes in, which is another form of destroying the environment. This process uses pressurized water into the fissures deep in the ground and introduces chemicals, water and sand to extract coal and natural gas. Some of these chemicals are known to be toxic to humans and the ecosystem but are continually being used by drilling companies. Countless complaints of residents that live nearby hydraulic fracking sites have been reported but most of which have been dismissed. About a quarter of the water mixed with these toxic chemicals rise back to the surface and inevitably gets reused by other industries such as food production.
That is why we need to find alternatives – using electric cars – not only about where we get our energy from but also how to go about our daily tasks without aggravating the already unbalanced ecology, and doing what we can to preserve it. Electric cars or EVs can mitigate this issue by eliminating or reducing the demand for oil extracted from fossil fuels, thereby cutting down emissions produced by Internal Combustion Engine or ICEs and Petroleum-producing industries. It is obviously a force of combined efforts not only by the government, but also by consumers and manufacturers alike. The government enforces new regulations to calibrate automobiles, implement a change to harness energy from cleaner and greener resources and means, and the companies that produce them to create more efficient and environment-friendly vehicles. Energy companies shift to sourcing from renewable energy, and consumers purchasing electric cars that are essentially better for the environment, and eventually give more savings in the long run.
